Why Azamara Is an Amazing Value for Destination-Focused Cruisers

As a travel advisor, it is important for me to personally experience the vacation styles I recommend. So when the opportunity to sail with Azamara came up, I was thrilled to accept. I spent seven nights onboard the Azamara Quest sailing from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Barbados, and the experience confirmed something I already suspected: Azamara offers exceptional value for travelers who want immersive cruising without the mega-ship crowding or luxury cruise price tag.

Port-Intensive Itineraries You Won’t Find Elsewhere

Azamara is known for port-intensive itineraries featuring smaller ports that big ships simply can’t access. On this sailing, we didn’t have a single planned sea day. My favorite stop was Bequia, a stunning island that feels like stepping back in time to what the Caribbean was decades ago. Because you spend more time in port, you get a deeper destination experience. Many days we didn’t leave until 8 or 9 pm, giving us the freedom to enjoy dinner ashore if we wished.

For travelers who want to explore rather than float, Azamara delivers outstanding value through time spent on land, not just at sea.

The Ideal Ship Size for Comfort and Community

Azamara’s four ships are all former R-Class vessels from the Renaissance Cruises fleet. Now over 20 years old, they still have great bones and feature thoughtfully modernized interiors. Holding just under 700 guests, these ships are an excellent size for travelers who want a close-knit cruising environment with premium amenities but don’t need the excess of a floating theme park.

With the ship size, included amenities, and the destination-focused itinerary style, you truly get more experience for the money compared to many larger-ship premium lines.

What’s Included Adds Real Value

Azamara includes meals, beverages, and standard crew gratuities in your fare. Their signature evening offerings such as the White Night party and the AzAmazing Evening cultural event add to the experience without adding to your bill. Other cruise lines often charge extra for this level of engagement.

Entertainment on board leans relaxed rather than flashy: think live music, comedy, and social time rather than Broadway. I’m told the real fun happened in The Living Room around 10 pm each night, with live music, dancing, karaoke, and a lively social atmosphere that kept the energy going long after dinner.

A Small-Ship Suite Experience That Feels Personal

Azamara completely renovated their stateroom interiors, and I loved the nautical color palette and soothing tones. You’ll find interior, oceanview, balcony, and suite accommodations.

Here’s where value speaks loudly:
If staying in an interior or balcony cabin is what makes a premium small-ship cruise possible, do it. The rooms may be snug (especially the bathrooms), but the destination and onboard atmosphere more than make up for it.

For those looking for an elevated experience, their suites are outstanding.
I stayed in a Continent Suite and can’t say enough good things about our butler, Eyup. Twice-daily refreshments, afternoon tea delivery, room service brought personally, and genuine care when my colleague became seasick – including ginger candies, apples, and crew members checking in – all made the service feel truly special. This is high touch value that most large ship lines simply cannot replicate.

Managing Expectations = Enjoying the Experience

Is Azamara perfect? No cruise line is. There were small areas that could be improved, and that’s expected. It’s important to understand that Azamara falls into the premium small-ship category, not the luxury tier.

What you are paying for is:

  • smaller ships
  • fewer guests
  • longer days in port
  • thoughtful service
  • and a rich cultural connection to the places you’re visiting

For travelers who value meaningful travel over flashy amenities, Azamara is one of the best values at sea.
